I feel the need to sing my accolades. I had never seen The Accused before, but I was assigned a scene from it for my acting class. I love Jodie Foster, so I had to take a look. I couldn't take my eyes away from the screen.
The whole story was so well-written and acted. And it was poignant. More poignant than I wish to admit. My first thought when the film was over was this: "Not much has changed, unfortunately."
The Accused was released in 1988. It's 2018 and rape culture is still a huge thing in women's every day lives. Victim Blaming is still the norm. And very few rapists are ever actually tried, or given a jail sentence. When will this stop? Because it has to.
If you haven't watched The Accused, go! It's a must see.
